At this site, the Saint of the Day is Sylvester I, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, who passed away in the year 355. For a tile to use in PC wallpaper, an icon image on the following web page would be suitable (especially with a border applied and reduced to about 70% of the original dimensions). http://bulgariablog.wordframe.net/Plovdiv/blog/filteredlist/?key=church This page is part of a Bulgarian web site, and it shows a date of January 2 for this observance, which evidently reflects the calendar of the Orthodox Church there. (The Church of England commerates a Protestant hero on this date --- John Wycliffe, who was instrumental in commissioning an English translation of the Bible. However he was a pretty edgy character to be substituted for a saint --- based on my reading of an account from the James Kiefer Hagiographies web site. http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/indexcal.html)
The Landscape of the Day is from Australia, in the State of Western Australia. Evidently scenic views in that state are not as numerous as elsewhere. So the following view of Mount Meharry in the Pilbara region is probably one of better wallpaper images available to represent that large area of the world (the world's second largest subnational political entity). http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=80108004&size=o Mount Meharry itself is located at the following coordinates (latitude and longitude) 22°58'20''S, 118°34'58''E. As you will see, the photo was taken some distance away, and this location is unknown.

Screensaver Images for Sunday, December 30
Below are links to illustrations for the scripture texts designated for today (the First Sunday after Christmas) according to the Book of Common Prayer Lectionary for Year A. (On a Windows PC, you can save these images to your My Pictures directory and set the screensaver option to a slide show of pictures in that directory.)
Isaiah 61:10-62:3 - One verse from this passage is illustrated in a graphic posted for use as wallpaper. http://www.craftdesigns4you.com/wallpaper.htm This page contains numerous thumbnails images; and the one you are seeking is posted in the third row from the bottom of this page. Click on the left item in this row to bring up a larger, more legible version in a separate window. This commercial web site is copyrighted by Cherie Marie Leck.
Psalm 147 - Verses 7-8 (in one of the optional parts of this psalm) are illustrated in another graphic posted for wallpaper use. http://www.christian-pics.com/wallpaper.php?id=flowers_fruits. You are looking for the second image on this index page. You must select one of three links which will allow you to pick the size/resolution of the image to be displayed, which is based on a photograph by Steve Vossaert.
Galatians 3:23-25; 4:4-7 - At the heart of this passage is the concept of the Holy Trinity - The Father (God), The Son (Christ) and the Holy Spirit. A symbolic illustration may be found in a graphic that appears to be a stained glass window design in various shades of green (with a little red). It is located about 45% of the way down this long page at http://www.throwtheword.com/throwtheword_archive/2006_02_01_throwtheword_archive.html. This site is apparently maintained by "Pastor Steve" --- possibly the Steven Moore who posted this item on what looks like an archived multi-contributor blog page.
John 1:1-18 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God..." Mark Lawrence of Alpharetta, Georgia has attempted to illustrate the concept of Christ the Word (based on verbal imagery from Revelation 19:13) with an abstract photograph at the following site http://www.flickr.com/photos/marketseq/880776049/ .

Wallpaper for Friday, December 28

The Observance of the Day is the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This observance remembers the babies who were slaughtered at the orders of King Herod in his effort to eliminate the Messiah (presumed to be a future king) as told by the gospel account in the book of Matthew Chapter 2. (I grant you that "Feast" may seem to be an an odd term for such a day; it is a traditional term that refers to the sacrament known as Holy Communion, Holy Eucharist, or the Mass --- i.e. the ritual instituted by Christ as described in Luke 22:19-20. This ritual would often be typical in this type of fairly significant, though optional, observance on the church calendar.) For use as a tile in PC wallpaper, I have inserted here an appropriate image -- a reduced version of a "Massacre of Innocents" painting by Fra Angelico from the Web Gallery of Art. It was originally painted as an altarpiece and is now housed at Museo di San Marco, Florence.
The Landscape of the Day is a scene from the Northern Territory of Australia, and specifically from Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=127754719&size=l A representative location would be 21º 48' 13" S, 133º 38' o2" E, from which location a similar photo was published on panaramio.com and linked to Google Earth.

The Saint of the Day is Saint John the Apostle. For a tile to use in PC wallpaper, the image at the following web page would work (particularly if an area of this painting were selected as a a portrait composition and saved for use as the tile after a border is applied.) This is a painting by Hans Memling. You might wish to edit out the cup which is a reference to an apocryphal legend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Apostle. The Saint of the Day is Saint Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian faith. As a tile as for PC wallpaper, the image at the following web site would be suitable (particularly if its dimensions are reduced to 50% or less of the original size). http://konicki.com/blog2/2005/12/26/feast-of-stephen-deacon-and-protomartyr/ Since Stephen was ordained as one of the original deacons of the Church, this icon shows Stephen in the role of a modern deacon --- in the process of polishing a thurible and a ciborium.

Screensaver Image for December 22-25
I suspect that you, like me, will change their routines and have other things to do than attending to daily changes of PC wallpaper. Therefore this blog will be on hiatus between the Feast of Saint Thomas and the Feast of Saint Stephen. For the intervening period, the following art work would make a very interesting and seasonal image to have as your screensaver. It's an image of a painting of the Nativity of Christ by Domenico Ghirlandaio from the excellent Carol Gerten-Jackson web site http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/ghirlandaio/p-ghirlandaio8.htm

The Saint of the Day is Thomas, The Apostle, one of the original 12 apostles. Today is a date for this observance that is used by the Anglicans and some Lutherans. (The Roman Church is observing the Feast of Saint Thomas on July 3.) For a tile to be used in PC wallpaper, the an image at the following site may be used(best with a border applied and reduced in size to 50% of dimension of the original - unexpanded - image). The image shows a painting by Diego Velasquez "The Apostle St. Thomas". The spear held by the saint is a reference to the cause of his martyr's death. http://www.allposters.com/-sp/The-Apostle-St-Thomas-circa-1619-20-Posters_i1348760_.htm

The Saint of the Day is Sebastian, Martyr at Rome. The traditional date for his passing is January 20, 287; however in the calendars of Orthodox churches, he is remembered on this date. Although his execution by bow and arrow (which he survived) is the subject of several Renaissance paintings, an icon works better as a tile for PC wallpaper. An excellent one may be found by way of the following site: http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp If it's December 18, you'll see a thumbnail image of the icon, which is smaller than I would prefer. Fortunately a double-click will bring up a larger version of the icon in a pop-up window. That larger version could be used for a wallpaper tile at about 66% of the original dimensions. (If it it's not December 18, you can still search for the © Orthodox Church of America data base for the saints of that date from the above-referenced page.)

The Saint of the Day is Saint Lucy of ancient Syracuse, a virgin and martyr, who died in 304, or thereabouts. For an appropiate tile for PC wallpaper, the image of a painting by Francesco del Cossa can be used: http://www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/pimage?372+0+0 from the web site of the National Gallery of Art. You may prefer to frame and save a smaller area in portrait format so as to eliminate the black corners that will have a distracting effect when repeated in an tile pattern. Of course you will probably save that image onto a color background and then save slightly larger with a portion of that background as a matte or collar around the image.
Having run out of resources for Antarctica, the Landscape of Day ventures into outer space for a view of Planet Earth. Of the several wallpaper images made available on the page from space.com. My favorite is "Intense Storms Forming Over Earth"

This image will have a slightly annoying logo from the content provider, which should probably remain if you want to use it within the terms of the license that it must surely be protected with even though I couldn't spot the specific details at the web site.

The Saint of the Day is Jeanne de Chantal, cofounder of a religious order, who passed away in 1641. For use as a tile for PC wallpaper, an appropriate image (if copied onto a color background and matted to produce a border - by selecting a larger area with image and a band of color background and copying that to a separate file and reducing it to 75% of original dimensions) may be found at the following web page: http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintj22.htm .

Look for the image under the heading "Dry Valleys", where two option for downloads are available at different levels of resolution.

Romans 15:4-13: On this page is another image containing a verse from one of the day's text. http://www.catholiccharismaticny.org/Papers/Articles/GOD_LIVES_UNDER_THE_BED/god_lives_under_the_bed.html . I don't totally understand how this illustrates the text, but it's a nice picture.
Matthew 3:1-12: Today's gospel reading is illustrated with a painting by Pieter Breughel the Younger, "A Landscape With Saint John The Baptist Preaching" as published on the Web by the Art Renewal Center: http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/art.asp?aid=2683&page=1&order=t . The Observance of the Day is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which celebrates the Roman Church doctrine that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was, uniquely among humans, free from "original sin". For most individuals who were not raised or trained in that tradition, this is hard to comprehend and appreciate. Without overdosing on the fine points of doctrine, those of us looking in from outside can simply treat this as another date to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary --- for example by displaying the work of art at the following web address: http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/g/ghirland/domenico/6tornab/61tornab/2birth.html. It's a painting by Domenico Ghirlandaio entitled "Birth of Mary" (as it might have been celebrated in 15th century Florence, instead of Israel in the 1st century BC). Double click on the thumbnail-version to get a larger size to use for PC wallpaper. It will work very nicely centrered.
The Landscape of the Day is another scene from Antarctica. It's labelled Erebus and may in fact show the mountain so named: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nomadwarmachine/325506234/. For PC wallpaper, I always display my landscape in the stretch format.

The Saint of the Day is Ambrose of Milan, bishop and theologian, who passed away in 397. For use as a wallpaper tile, a certain image may be used (after selecting and saving the top half in a portrait format, applying a border and shrinking the revised image dimensionally to 50% of the original) as found at the following URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AmbroseOfMilan.jpg

The Landscape of the Day is another scene from the large continent of Australia. In this view, a utilitarian, but interesting, foreground is offset by a sublime landscape and skyscape in the background: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=388275459&size=l. Of course, you should be aware that these large image files should be set to the stretch format, for the best effect when used as PC wallpaper.

Wallpaper for Tuesday, December 4
The Saint of the Day is John of Damascus, who passed away in the year of 749, or thereabouts. A tile for PC wallpaper could be made from the icon image that one can find at the following web page: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=66. Processing the image to set its dimensions to 75% of the original size will probably improve the effect of the tile pattern.
The Landscape of the Day is another scene from Antarctica. It can be accessed through the 7th of eight thumbnail images in the 12/29/2004 posting at this blog site: http://www.elementarypenguin.com/?cat=2 . The Saint of the Day at this blog is Sava Storozhevsky the Abbot of Zvenigorod, who passed away on this date (Julian Calendar) in 1406. An icon image may be found at the Orthodox Church in America web site: http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp?SID=4 The icon is in a separate popup window that you can access through a direct link on December 3, or by using the "Search for a feast or saint by DATE" feature. I would modify the full-size icon image by using image processing software to move the bottom border up to frame a portrait composition, then select that portion of the image and save it to a separate file. For a PC wallpaper tile, this image may need to be reduced in size, depending on which version of the icon was used.
Another saint observed on this date is Francis Xavier who passed away in 1552. He was co-founder of the Jesuit order, and missionary to India and the Far East. This saint is a bit edgy, in the sense that Christian evangelists associated with the colonialism of the 16th -18th centuries may seem to have been quite heavy handed and controversial from today's perspective of multiculturalism. Without making any judgements, I will skip this saint until I am better informed about him. For fans of Francis Xavier, the following URL provides an appropriate image to use for wallpaper tiles (particularly if a border is applied): http://www.library.fordham.edu/whatsnew/jesuit.html

Screensaver Images for Sunday, December 2
Below are links to illustrations for the scripture texts designated for today (the First Sunday of Advent) according to the Revised Common Lectionary for Year A. (On a Windows PC, you can save these images to your My Pictures directory and set the screensaver option to a slide show of pictures in that directory.)
Isaiah 2:1-5 - "... they shall beat their swords into plowshares ..." - Here follows an amended image reference. The original reference was to a logo based on a dramatic work of sculture. The logo did not display well, so a reference to a photo of the original work of arts is now displayed here: http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/photos/New_York/pages/Swords%20into%20plowshares%20at%20UN.htm . This sculpture is displayed out in the open on the grounds of the United Nations Headquarters, and with the Borough of Queens across the East River in the background . This work of art was created by Evgeniy Vuchetich, and was a gift from the Soviet Union in 1959.
Psalm 122 - '... Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you."...'
An illustration may be found at the following web page: http://www.marketplaceconnections.com/airborne/Israel/israel_1.htm This is presented on the Web by Australian Marketplace Connections Inc. of Balwyn, Victoria, Australia.
Romans 13:11-14: - "... Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light..."
This portion of the text is illustrated by clip art of the late Richard Lonsdale, which is available at the following web page: http://www.silk.net/RelEd/Year%20A/1adventA.htm When these gif files are copied, the images turn out to be black with dark green shading, which makes them hard to read. This problem can be fixed with image processing software (such as the the Windows Paint utility) by resaving the image as a bmp file and changing the background color using the Fill With Color tool.
Matthew 24:36-44 - "... so will be the coming of the Son of Man....Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left..."
This text is illustrated by a clip art drawing at the following web page: http://www.mscperu.org/caricaturas/graficoslit/adviento_navidad/1_adv_a.htm. This web site is maintained by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Peru. (Misioneros del Sagrado Corazón en el Perú).

Wallpaper for Saturday, December 1
The Saint of the Day is Eligius, Bishop of Noyon, who passed away this date in 660 (or 659). A found of a monastery, who eventually ordained and appointed bishop, he began his career as goldsmith (i.e. jeweler). An image suitable for use a a tile in PC wallpaper shows him in that role. It is a detailed veiw of a painting by Pertrus Christus and would work best as a wallpaper tile if a border is applied: http://www.jordanknives.com/stdunstan2.htm.
