The Observance of the Day is Ash Wednesday the beginning of the 40-day season of prayer, fasting and penance (on weekdays and Saturdays) prior to the celebration of Easter Sunday. The intention for the Landscape of the Day is feature a third visit to the Republic of Mongolia, as follows: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=209990548&size=l The labelling is apparently a view in the vicinity of the mountain known as Tavan Bogd. Although the labelling indicates Mongolia, my suspicion is that ths picture was taken near the following point --- 49°08'0''N, 87°39'0''E --- which is actually in the nearby Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in China. However, let's call it Mongolia as the photographer did, because it's one of the best I could find to represent that nation.

Wallpaper for Saturday, January 5

The Saint of the Day is John Nepomucene Neumann, C.SS.R., Bishop of Philadelphia, who passed away in the year 1870. For a tile to use in PC wallpaper a small photograph about halfway down the following page would suffice (particularly with a color border applied or matted around it). http://www.redemptorists.com/english/about_redemptorists/pioneers.htm .

The Landscape of the Day is a scene from the highlands in the western half of the island of New Guinea. This area is comprised by two provinces of Indonesia that use the name "Papua". It's less confusing to use the former name of this area Irian (no, I didn't mean Iran). http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Indonesia/Irian_Jaya/photo442717.htm

Wallpaper for Thursday, January 3

The Hero of the Day is Gladys Aylward, Missionary to China, who passed away in 1970. Her mission was the subject of a featured motion picture "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" in which the role of Ms. Aylward was played by Ingrid Bergman. More information can be had at the James Kiefer hagiography site. http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/indexcal.html. For a tile to generate PC wallpaper honoring this individual (with a border applied) an image on the following web page, about 1/4 of the way down. web-accessible image posted as follows would be a good choice: http://www.jeremytiss.com/biographies.htm. The site owner, Jeremy Tish, claims a site copyright so don't print this without his permission unless you can establish that the image, per se, is in the public domain.

The Landscape of the Day is one last image of the State of Western Australia, and the entire continent of Australia --- what an Illinoisan would call a prairie landscape. At this site, you will note that there is link to downoad an extra high resolution version that will really look good as wallpaper in a stretch format, provided that you don't mind a 15 megabyte file. http://www.worldisround.com/articles/325832/photo8.html. (You can copy from the image on this web page for use in the stretch format, but it may be a little grainy.)

If anyone noticed --- apologies for the lateness of this posting. Google and I had a missed commication with respect to my password and that has now been resolved.

Wallpaper for Tuesday, January 1

It's New Year's Day, of course, but on the various calendars of the saints, the observance for today has had a variety of names and themes, all centered about one event that must have, in all probaiblity, occured on the eighth day after the birth of Christ. It's the Jewish ceremony known these days as the Bris Milah, whereby newborn males are given the mark prescribed in God's covenant with Abraham, and are given a Hebrew name as part of the ceremony. As a Christian observance, this date has been known as the Feast of the Circumcision. The Roman Church observes the date as the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.

This blog will remember the day as the Observance of the Day --- The Holy of Jesus. An appropriate image for this concept may be found at the following site: http://www.wga.hu/index1.html. From here, use the site search engine, entering both the terms "El Greco" for Author and "Name of Jesus" for title. This will bring up a window showing two paintings by El Greco entitled "The Adoration of the Name of Jesus" as posted at the Web Gallery of Art. Either of these should be appropriate if displayed using the "Centered" option for PC wallpaper.

The Landscape of the Day is again from Australia in the State of Western Australia. The view is identified as Kimberly Gorge, which seems to e in the vicinity of Lat: 16°0'0'' S; Long: 126°0'0'' E. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=431219343&size=l .
