Wallpaper for Friday, April 4

The Hero of the Day is Martin Luther King, Jr., a minister of the gospel and a witness to injustice, who was slain for that witness on this day in 1968. Perhaps not many would call him a saint, except in a broad sense (such as Phillipians 1:1). But, by a coincidence of history, he died within 130 feet of Saint Martin Street, which borders the rear of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. An image for display on your computer screen as a desktop background in the tiled format has been uploaded here. I don't know the original source, but I borrowed it from another blogger. http://paskewich.typepad.com/paskewichcom/2007/01/i_have_a_dream_.html
I recommend that you treat it as copyright-protected.
The Landscape of the Day is a scene from the Province of Ancona in Italy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/darkmavis/338651022/sizes/o/ This represents an area of the world centered around the Adriatic Sea, which also includes Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, the Swiss canton of Ticino, and to top off the land area, the island of Corsica, which is under the sovereignty of France.

The Saint of the Day is Richard, Bishop of Chichester who passed away in the year 1253. For a display of this saint on your computer desktop background (in a tiled format) a suitable image may be found at the following web page: http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/adversaries/bios/rdelawych.html © Nash Ford Publishing 2006. All Rights Reserved. I would recommend that a border in a pleasing color be applied to this image of a statue in a niche and that it be reduced to 66% - 75% of its original dimensions for the best effect as a wallpaper tile.

The Landscape of the Day is a scene from Greece. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7197577@N03/2302465196/sizes/o/ This represents an area of the world that also includes Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Cyprus and eastern Turkey.

Wallpaper for Wednesday, April 2

The Saint of the Day is Francis of Paola, a monk who passed away in 1507. For display in the desktop background on your computer, my preferred image would be on page at the following URL: http://www.calabriangenealogy.googlepages.com/paola © Calabrian Genealogy 2007 This would be the fourth picture that you find as you scroll down this page. For the above stated purpose, this image will display best if you reduce it to 60% - 75% of its original dimensions, apply a border in an attactive color and use the tiled format.

The Landscape of the Day is a view from eastern central Turkey. http://www.flickr.com/photos/soho501/278549729/sizes/l/ The photographer gave this picture the name "Nemrut Landscape", apparently in reference to a mountain of that name located at 38° 2′ 7″ N, 38° 45′ 48″ E.

Wallpaper for Tuesday, April 1

Today's observance is the Feast of the Annuciation, (transferred from March 25, during Easter Week) This observance commemorates Mary's assent to become the mother of Jesus. This story of this event is told in Luke 1:26-38. this event is well illustrated in a painting, Annunciation, by Philippe de Champaigne, which may be found at the at the following page of the Web Gallery of Art site, Web Gallery of Art, created by Emil Kren and Daniel Marx) http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/c/champaig/annunci1.html This image depicting Mary, the mother of Jesus, may well be displayed as background in the Centered format

The Landscape of the Day is from northern Iraq. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesdale10/2094365232/sizes/l/ It represents one 500,000 sq. km. partition of the earth, that excludes certain southern Iraq provinces, as noted for yesterday's landscape. Also included in this area, which approximates the historic Mesopotamia, are several far eastern provinces of Turkey.

Wallpaper for Monday, March 31

Holy Week and Easter Week are past, when the dramatic events of Christ's passion and resurrection were observed. Now the focus of various church calendars widens to include to include the saints. The Saint of the Day is Joseph, who was betrothed to Mary when she assented to her role as the mother of Jesus and who subsequently became her husband. Images of Joseph have been produced by many iconographers and other artistists. The objective here to find one that will work in the tiled position to create a background to the desktop view on your computer screen as controlled by the display options available on your computer. My preference is a certain image of Joseph, holding the Christ child, represented in the stained glass style. It's the third image displayed on the foolowing page at Arnold Ahlstrom's "Jesus Explained" web site. http://www.jesus-explained.org/baby-jesus.html To have an appropriate size of tile, I expect to reduce this image to about 60% of its current dimensions and apply a narrow border in a contrasting color.

The Landscape of the Day features a scene from Oman. http://www.flickr.com/photos/begemot/386343646/sizes/l/ The approximate location referenced by the photographer - Jebel Akhdar - is elsewhere identified as follows: 23°21'54'' N; 57°54'47'' E. This picture represents represents an area of the earth that includes the lands along the western shore of the Persian Gulf including Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and an unphotogenic portion of Saudi Arabia --- as well as the Iraqi provinces of Muthanna, Basra and Dhi Qar.

Screensaver Images for Sunday, March 30

Below are links to illustrations for the scripture texts designated for today (The Second Sunday of Easter) according to the Revised Common Lectionary for Year A. (On a Windows PC, you can save these images to your My Pictures directory and set the screensaver option to a slide show of pictures in that directory.)

Acts 2:14a,22-32: Peter's Speech - Gustave Doré illustrated this passage with an engraving, which may be seen at the Catholic Resources web sight. http://www.catholic-resources.org/Dore/Acts02b.jpg

Psalm 16 - "You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy" - A flag design features the above text on the background of a Thomas Kincaide art work at the garden-flags.com site. http://www.garden-flags.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G139405-GF © 1998-2008 Garden-Flags.com, A Division of A.C.E., Inc.

1 Peter 1:3-9 - "In this [salvation] you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith-- being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire" I continue to rely on the clip art archive of the late Fr. Richard Lonsdale, which is copyrighted, but freely available for non-commercial use at http://www.silk.net/RelEd/Year%20A/2easterA.htm , courtesy of the Resources for Catholic Educators web site. The original images in gif format sometimes do not reproduce well so I have posted an enhanced jpg version here.
John 20:19-31 - The Story of 'Doubting Thomas' at Jesus' Second Appearance to the Disciples Assembled - A reproduction of a painting by Guercino may be found at the Web Gallery of Art site http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/g/guercino/1/thomas_d.html (Site copyright © Web Gallery of Art, created by Emil Kren and Daniel Marx.) Wallpaper for Saturday, March 29

I am running out of sources for major works of art illustrating events commemorated during Easter Week. For Holy Saturday I am borrowing an illustration of Jesus with his discplines before his crucifixion and resurrection. But let's use it for a proxy for a post-Resurrection appearance with the disciples as described in Mark 16:9-15. http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getposter.asp&APNum=1349718&CID=864D475FDE0744A7B6DC063573CDE20B&PPID=1&search=Gerung&f=t&FindID=0&P=1&PP=1&sortby=PD&cname=&SearchID= This allposter.com link leads to a page with a small reproduction of a work of Renaissance Art described there. If you click on that you will get a large version of the same image, albeit with a watermark on it. One way or the other, this illustration should be adequate for use as a centered desktop background (wallpaper) on your computer screen.

The Landscape of the Day is a scene from Yemen. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ninjawil/2205176369/sizes/l/ The photographer gives the location as Tarim at 16°3' 04" N, 49°0' 16" E, in the area known as the Hadramawt.

Wallpaper for Friday, March 28

For Friday in Easter Week, an appropriate subject is the post-Resurrection appearance of Jesus at the Sea of Tiberias as described in the scriptures at John 21:1-14. Duccio di Buoninsegna illustrated this event in a painting that can be viewed on the web at the Web Gallery of Art site: http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/d/duccio/buoninse/maesta/crown_v/cro_v_c.html . Click on the image for a larger version. With the large format and Christ as the subject of the painting, this can be best displayed in the Centered format as a Background (i.e. wallpaper) option.

This is a good opportunity to make the point that the display of art on your computer screen is greatly improved if you can position all of your desktop icons around the perimeter of the screen, where they become more or less an enhancement rather than a nuisance.

In the Landscape of the Day we conclude our 4-day visit to Saudi Arabia. The location of this landscape shot is tagged as the Hejaz --- the mountainous eastern part of the country which parallels the shore of the Red Sea. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tumbrent/343614719/sizes/o/

Wallpaper for Thursday, March 27

For Thursday in Easter Week, an appropriate illustration would be a painting of Jesus entitled Appearence While the Apostles are at Table by Duccio di Buoninsegna (1255-1319). http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=22778 This painting illustrates a passage of scripture, Luke 24:36-48, which describes a post-resurrection appearance. Since the subject is Christ, this image could well be displayed in the "centered" format. The size of your screen may be such that you should reduce the original image to 80% or thereabouts, so that it will be fully visible.

The Landscape of the Day is the third in a series of four from Saudi Arabia. In this journey around the world that begins this week, Saudi Arabia is entitled to four views based on the standard of representing an area of approximately 500,000 sq. km. each day, Monday - Saturday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/stringfellow/2349704254/sizes/l/ This scene is from the Rub' al Khali --- The Empty Quarter of southern Saudi Arabia.

Wallpaper Images for Wednesday, March 26

For Wednesday of Easter Week I am recommending an artwork from the Carol Gerten-Jackson fine arts web site: Dinner at Emmaus by Diego Velazquez: http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/velazque/p-velazq31.htm. This illustration another post-Resurrection appearance by Jesus in a story described at the Walk to the Emmaus, which may found at Luke 24:13-35. With Jesus as the principal subject, you would probably want to display this centered on your Background screen. It would probably display better if the image were reduced in size to 75% of its original dimensions (using the Windows Paint utility or other image processing software).

The Landscape of the Day is another scene from Saudi Arabia. http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Middle_East/Saudi_Arabia/photo658472.htm Of course this would best be displayed in the Stretch format for your Background (i.e. PC wallpaper) display.

Wallpaper Images for Tuesday, March 25

This is the final day in our Easter series --- icons of Christ. I typically start my work day with one of these centered on my screen against a background of the seasonal color (gold today replacing the Easter season color of white). I can't give a source for all these icons, but several of them were found at http://www.missionstcare.com/ Assume that they are copyrighted and only for personal use. I don't know what the icon writers were thinking, but my identification of today's image is "Jesus Christ, The Eternal Word"

A traditional scripture reading for Tuesday in Easter Week is John 20: 11-18 in which Mary Magdalene goes to the empty tomb of Jesus and then sees him (thinking him to be a gardener). He calls her by name and says (in older translations) "Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father" The first part of this phrase in Latin ---"Noli me tangere" --- is the subject of several works of art, including the a painting by Fra Angelico that may be found at Carl Gerton-Jackson's fine arts web site http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/angelico/p-angeli13.htm. This could well be displayed as wallpaper in centered format. Some image processing --- reduction in size or selecting and resaving the main detail of the painting as a separate image --- may be required to permit this image to display at its best advantage.

The Landscape of the Day is from Saudi Arabia. http://www.flickr.com/photos/josedeluna/1442622552/sizes/o/ It should make satisfactory wallpaper

Wallpaper Images for Monday, March 22

As part of the Holy Week cycle, I have been posting icons of Christ which I typically use on my PC wallpaper during the morning hours. Tiling would be inappropriate; I always display images of Christ in the centered format, with a seasonal color for the background. In lieu of white, the seasonal color for the Easter season, I will be using a gold background, since white is not a good color for computer screen wallpaper. My identification for today's image is Jesus Christ, Our Great High Priest. (Blogger is not uploading at the present time.)

For Monday in Easter Week an appropriate image for tiled PC wallpaper would be a picture of a stained glass window from the web site of an English Church --- St George of Headstone, Harrow. http://www.stgeorgeheadstone.org.uk/section/7 The recommended image is the first on the above web page. For use as a tile in PC wallpaper, I would select the lower 3/4 of this image and save that to new file, apply a color border, and use this new file in the tiled format.

The Landscape of the Day series resumes today with a view from Lebanon. http://www.flickr.com/photos/strike1/179469584/sizes/l/ As wallpaper, this image would best be used in the Stretch format. The landscape image represents an area of the world (roughly 500,000 sq. km.) that has historically been described as The Levant. --- Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria (and in my strictly geographical division of the Earth) the Egyptian territory of Sinai and the Saudi province of Tabuk.

Images for Sunday, March 23

This is a catch-up entry posted after the date for which it was indicated as a matter of record and for possible use a year from now.

The following graphics may be used for wallpaper on your computer in the "centered" format. The most appropriate background color for Holy Week is red. For the purposes of this blog, I have given this icon on the right the title: Jesus Christ, The Good Shepherd. I don't know exactly where this icon originated, but I may have found it at http://www.missionstclare.com/.
An appropriate image for Easter Sunday is by Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp, illustrating "The Angel is Opening Christ's Tomb". This may be found at the Web Gallery of Art page: http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/c/cuyp/benjamin/opening.html As with most of these sites, one can click on the image to enlarge it. In this case, the enlarged image may be suitable in centered format since the essence of the painting is its central subject.

I don't know exactly where this icon originated, but I may have found it at http://www.missionstclare.com/.

This date is Holy Saturday and which, in the Holy Week observance, represents the 24-hour day that Christ's body lay in the tomb from beginning to end. The Apostles Creed says that "he descended into Hell" or "descended to the dead". A scripture reference (Ephesians 4:8) says "He led captivity captive". These ideas leave plenty of room for speculation and artists have illustrated some of the events that are supposed to have filled this interlude, as discussed at the following Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrowing_of_Hell I recommend the illustration that you will find there: Christ leads the patriarchs from Hell to Paradise by Bartolomeo Bertejo. The thumbnail image on that page may be greatly enlarged, by clicking on the image. However, an image of that size will probably need a 50% - 60% reduction of its dimensions in order to be used as a centered wallpaper image.

Of the classical art currently available on the Internet, my favorite is a painting by Andrea Mantegna at the following web page http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/cjackson/mantegna/p-mantegn9.htm which is posted on the Carol Gerten-Jackson's fine art site (CGFA).

For the purposes of this blog, I have given this icon on the right the title: Jesus Christ, Our Wonderful Counselor --- (a reference to the prophecy in Isaiah 9:6).
For Maundy Thursday, an appropriate illustration would be a painting of the Last Supper by Valentin de Boulogne which the Web Gallery of Art posts at the following web page. http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/v/valentin/lastsupp.html You would probably want to use the enlarged version (Click on the small image featured on this web page to enlarge it.). At this size, it will probably not fit your screen in the centered format. This painting is an appropriate aspect ratio for display in the stretched format.

Appropriately for Holy Tuesday, a painting by Valentin de Boulogne illustrates the event described in the scriptures at Matthew 21:12–17, the expulsion of the money-changers for the temple. It may be found at the following web page from the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/fcgi-bin/db2www/descrPage.mac/descrPage?selLang=English&indexClass=PICTURE_EN&PID=GJ-1214&numView=1&ID_NUM=1&thumbFile=%2Ftmplobs%2FYR%24WCD1_23PUEUKF406.jpg&embViewVer=last&comeFrom=quick&sorting=no&thumbId=6&numResults=1&tmCond=Valentin+de+Boulogne&searchIndex=TAGFILEN&author=Valentin%26%2332%3Bde%26%2332%3BBoulogne Two links at the right side of the image on this page will bring up pages that will display this image in forms more appropriate for your use. (For wallpaper use, this one might do better in the stretch format than it would centered.)

Images for Monday, March 17

This is a catch up entry; since I was away for a few days.

For Holy Week, and a few days beyond, this site will feature two images suitable for use as wallpaper in the centered format, with a red background. This first will be an icon of Christ, which I have saved for personal use. (Assume it is copyrighted). I don't know where it came from exactly, but it may be one several found at http://www.missionstclare.com/. In ignorance of the actual source or the intent of the orginal icon writer, I have given this icon the following label: Jesus Christ, The Head of the Church.

In the eucharistic lectionary for Holy Monday, the gospel reading places Jesus at the homes of his friend Lazarus, Martha and Mary. (John 12:1-11) As an illustration of this event, I would recommend the image of a painting by Jan Vermeer that may be found at the following web page: http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/v/vermeer/01-early/01christ.html in the site of the Web Gallery of Art.

Images for Sunday, March 16

Having been out of town for a few weeks, I've gotten behind on my postings, so this is a catch up entry.

March 16 is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week when Christian religious observances shift into high gear. Saints of the Day are put on hold and every day has its own special meaning as was reflect on the final days leading up to Jesus' death and resurrection. For the next week or so, this site will feature two daily images --- a work of art appropriate to the day and an icon of Jesus Christ.

Although I like to use a tiled wallpaper background featuring the saint of the day, I usually being the day with an icon centered on a screen that displays the liturgical color appropriate for the season. (red for Holy Week; different shades of purple for Lent and Advent; gold in lieu of white for the seasons after Easter and Christmas; and green for the seasons after Pentecost and Epiphany) .

At the following web page one my find an illustration of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem attributed to Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, apparently in a work by Ludwig Richter. Since the text is Korean, the sources are not 100% clear to me. http://kcm.co.kr/bible01/lr/r-166.html

The Saint of the Day is Matilda of Saxony. The devout wife of a king and a founder of churches, she passed away in 968. http://www.american-pictures.com/genealogy/descent/photos/Matilda.Saint.jpg I prefer the above web-accessible image of a framed painting to the holy card that one may find elsewhere on the web. However to use this for PC wallpaper it would be best to eliminate a shadow effect by selecting a symmetrical portion of the image which might include the frame or the matte around the painting itself. Then save the selected portion of the image to a new (bmp) file which can serve as the tile for today's PC wallpaper.
