The Saint of the Day is Monica of Hippo, mother of Saint Augustine, who passed away in 387. The traditional date for this remembrance has been May 4 (which fell on Sunday this year). In the Roman Church, the date was moved to August a few decades ago. An image, and more data on Saint Monica can be found at the following web page. http://saints.sqpn.com/saintm04.htm For a tiled background in your screen display you will want to apply a colorful border and a reduce this image to about 65% of its original dimensions. As an alternate to an internal border that would cover some detail, you might place it in a map by copying it onto a work area comprised of a large, color-filled square. Then select and save a larger area that includes a band of the surrounding color.
The Landscape of the Day is a scene from Botswana representing the 1/2 million square kilometers comprised by the eastern and central areas of that land.

The Saints of the Day are Saint Philip and Saint James, the Apostles, two of the original twelve selected by Jesus. The usual date for this observance is May 1. However, this year that was date for Ascension Day, which customarily takes precedence. There is a lack of art work with just these two paricular saints as the subject. For tiled images to use as a wallpaper background on your screen display, you could of course select an image of either saint. Or you could 1) select equal sized icons of those two saints, 2) create a blank work space in your image processing utility and then 3) copy and paste in each icon into the space and align them in a side by side arrangement. Then select the two icons together and save that as your image for the tiled background. for best results you will probably want to reduce the size of the new image pair to approximately 65 percent of the original dimensions. The following web page has suitable icons of these two saints who are among many represented in alphabetical order there.

May 1 is a day that resonates with various meanings. May Day --- a day for dancing around a may pole in celebration of spring time, a day for European workers to march in solidarity for respect and better treatment, a national day of prayer in the USA, a day for honoring high profile saints and heroes --- Saint Joseph, in his role as a worker, and the Apostles, Saint Philip and Saint James.

The Saint of the Day is Catherine of Siena (OP, Tert.) who passed away in 1380. Of several representations on the web, my favorite is on a bookcover: http://www.marianland.com/sevenhills/1033045-SH.html. Copyright © Marianland 1980 - Present It's the first item on this catalog page. You will need to use image processing software, such as the Windows Paint utility, to select the image portion of the book cover and save it to a separate graphic file, which should then be reduced to about 50% of its original dimensions and then have a border applied.

Although Louis Marie de Monfort is a popular saint for remembrance today, art has not blessed him with any really good representations that I can find. Therefore the Saint of the Day is Peter Chanel, missionary to Oceania and martyr, who died in 1841. The image on the following page will need a reduction in size, and probably a border to be useable in a tiled background for your computer screen display. http://www.heiligenlexikon.de/BiographienP/Pierre_Chanel.htm

The image seems to have been enhanced somewhat, as with Photo Shop, to intensify the colors so as to make landscape stand out more dramatically in what may have originally been a flat and dull image, due to the clouds, haze and shaded areas.

Today much the western church remembers Saint Mark, the Evangelist, who wrote one of the four gospels of the Bible. For use as a tile in the background of one's computer screen display, I like a work of art that I found at the following web address. http://www.hellenic-art.com/catalogue/102R-41-4.jpg. To be fair, I should point you to the catalogue page, where you can see similar works of art and even order one. http://www.hellenic-art.com/sterling/othersaints.htm 1999-2008 Hellenic-Art.com This image needs some processing for use as a tile. Select a portion of the image that eliminates most of the wide black border and save that to a new file. Then reduce the image in this new file to about 50% of its original dimensions.

For fans of the somewhat mythic figure Saint George, who is honored today, I would point you to the following web site, where a nice, but apparently restricted-use icon, may be found. http://www.goarch.org/en/special/listen_learn_share/george/learn/. You will probably want to reduce this considerably in size and add a border, if you wish to use it as a tiled background on your computer screen. The following restrictions apply: Icon of Saint George provided by Athanasios Clark and used with permission. Site copyright: © 2008 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. If you would prefer a dragon slayer motif, I have no doubt that some be found using the "Saint George" key in the subject index at http://www.artcyclopedia.com.
We have more reliable data on another extraordinary individual, more attuned to today's Zeitgeist --- Toyohiko Kagawa, renewer of society, who passed away in 1960. At this blog, he will be the Hero of the Day, A photo may be found at the Jesus Band site: http://www.jesusband.jp/kagawa.html. I plan to reduce it to about 60-70% of the original dimensions and apply a border for use as tiled wallpaper background. This site has a few pages for English speakers that give some background on this honored individual, who is also the subject of a Wikipedia article.
The Landscape of the Day is a scene from Lake Bunyoni in Uganda. http://www.flickr.com/photos/swissfrog/485399586/sizes/o/ This great view would be even greater if one could use a little image processing to paste small clippings of natural background over a couple of white roofs that are bit too eyecatching for my taste. This view represents and area of the world that also includes northwestern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The Saint of the Day is Theodore of Sykeon an abbot and bishop who passed away in 613. A very ornate icon with a figure of this saint may be found at the following site: http://www.heiligenlexikon.de/BiographienT/Theodor_von_Sikeon.html You may use image processing software, like the Microsoft utility Paint, to select an appropriate portion of the image and save it to another file, where you can put a border around it and use it a tile for your computer wallpaper background. For a more in-depth story about this rather obscure saint, I would recommend the Katherine Rabenstein archive, where the various saints remembered on April 22 are listed at http://www.saintpatrickdc.org/ss/0422.shtml © 2007 by St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Washington, D.C

The Saint of the Day is Alphege of Canterbury, who passed away in the year 1012. To find a image of Saint Alphege useable for a tiled background on your computer screen display (i.e. wallpaper), I would recommend the following page at David Nash Ford's website. © Nash Ford Publishing 2005 http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/adversaries/bios/aelfheah.html This is a rendering in the characteristic style of this site, with a bold interpretive portrait rendered in the style of a stained glass window. This image will need a reduction to about 55% of the original dimensions, and will need to have a narrow border applied, to achieve a size and format appropriate for a wallpaper tile.
The Landscape of the Day is a scene from northern Somalia, an area also known as Somaliland (formerly a British colony). http://www.flickr.com/photos/najeeb/6201090/sizes/o/ This view represents as area of the world (roughly 500,000 sq. km.) extending from the Horn of Africa northward along the coast of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea --- including this part of Somalia, Djibouti (formerly French Somaliland), Eritrea and far eastern Ethiopia.

The Saint of the Day is the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, a young Native American woman who passed away in 1680. An appropriate image is the second on the following page of the Pylger Almanac http://www.pylgeralmanak.nl/?pagina_id=191 For use in a tiled background for your computer screen display (wallpaper), I would reduce it to about 60% of its original dimensions, and apply a border.

Screensaver Images for Sunday, April 13

Below are links to illustrations for the scripture texts designated for the Fourth Sunday of Easter according to the Revised Common Lectionary for Year A. (On a Windows PC, you can save these images to your My Pictures directory and set the screensaver option to a slide show of pictures in that directory.)
Acts 2:42-47: "Those who had been baptized devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." An icon image showing the twelve apostles may be found at the web site of the St. Joseph Melkite Catholic Church of Lawrence, Massachusetts. http://www.stjosephmelkitecatholicchurch.org/eparchy.events.html The origin of this image is not clear; it may be copyrighted.
Psalm 23: The first two verses of this Psalm text are shown on a fine art print by Andrea Smith that appears to have done originally in watercolor. It's the seventh catalog image on this page advertising Giclee prints that may be ordered at this web site. (Copyright © 2008. Heirloom Christian Arts, Inc.) http://www.heirloomchristianarts.com/fine_art.htm
1 Peter 2:19-25: The clip art archive of the late Fr. Richard Lonsdale is copyrighted, but freely available for non-commercial use, courtesy of the Resources for Catholic Educators web site. The original image for today may be found at: http://www.silk.net/RelEd/Year%20A/4easterA.htm Since I have had trouble using these graphic files in their original gif format, I have posted an enhanced jpg version above.
John 10:1-10: Parable of the Shepherd and the Sheep The illustration on the following web page is a classic depiction of Jesus as the Good Shepherd from the image archive of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt. http://www.coptic.net/pictures/Tableau.GoodShepherd.gif

With apologies to Saint Stanislaus, who is not well represented by graphics available on the Web (unless you want to look at him being hacked to death with swords), the Hero of the Day is George Augustus Selwyn, Anglican Bishop of New Zealand who passed away in 1878. A small image in the form of painted portrait may be found as the second image in the main window of the following web page: http://www.sel.cam.ac.uk/library/archives/index.html With a border added, in an appropriate color, this would be an adequate image for creating wallpaper (with the Display/Screen/background commands). If you would like to use a larger tile, you would probably prefer to start with this higher resolution image http://www.sel.cam.ac.uk/library/archives/Augustus%20Selwyn%20-%20Richmond%20portrait-copy.jpg and reduce its size to an appropriate percentage of its original dimensions.
Today's Landscape of the Day is from the far north of Sudan. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mdziedzic/69267510/sizes/o/ It shows a view from the southern reaches of Lake Nasser near Wadi Halfa (approximately 21°51'49"N, 31°15'45"E) This is the lake created by the damming of the Nile River at Aswan, in southern Egypt, which is also part of the area represented by today's landscape.

The Saint of the Day is Fulbert of Chartres who passed away in 1028. On the following web page, just below the title graphic is a small thumbnail-size image. http://cathedrale.chartres.free.fr/pg03.htm Click in this to bring up a window with a larger version of the image that, with a border applied, could well be used to create a display in the background of your computer screen (wallpaper) used a tiled format.
The Landscape of the Day represents the northern half of Egypt, excluding the Suez Peninsula which was grouped with the Day 1 area (the Levant --- see posting for March 24) to help it reach the appropriate size (500,000 square kilometers) meters. http://www.flickr.com/photos/simiosapiens/1012233014/sizes/o/ The wide black border is not appropriate for wallpaper use, but you may be able to deal with this in one of two ways. With your image processing software (such as the Windows utility "Fill with Color") it's easy to replace the black with a less obtrusive color such as light grey. Also depending on the size and resolution of your computer screen, use of the "centered" format instead of the stretched format may make enlarge the height and width of the image and in effect make the border disappear. The photographer gives the location of this view as 28°8' 26" N, 28°44' 32" E, which is identified elsewhere as the Black Desert area west of the Nile River.

The Hero of the Day is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, priest and theologian, who died in 1945. A appropriate image for display on your computer screen as tiled background (wallpaper) may be found at the following web page: http://www.myetv.org/about_etv/pressroom/highlights/2006/02-feb/Boenhoeffer.cfm This turns out to be a rather large image which can best be tiled if reduced to about 12% of the original dimension and with an appropriate border applied.
The Landscape of the Day is the final image in our sequence from Libya. http://www.flickr.com/photos/15295652@N00/251149871/sizes/o/ As you are no doubt aware, landscape images work best as wallpaper if they are set to the "Stretched" format option available through the Display/Screen/Background series of commands available with the Windows operating system.

The Saint of the Day is from the calendar observed by the Orthodox churches --- Saint Herodian, identified from various early sources or traditions as one of the 70 apostles commissioned by Christ in Luke 10: 1-24. His approximate year of death was 67. For an image to create wallpaper to display in your computer screen background, I would recommend the following blog site page--- http://molonlabe70.blogspot.com/2008/04/apostle-herodion-of-seventy-and-those.html , where you will find an icon of Herodian under the entry for this date (April 8, 2008). I plan to reduce the siae to about 25% of the dimensions of the image as it appears on the screen in order to optimize the appearance of the wallpaper as a background feature in the tiled format.

For display on your computer display screen as a background in the tiled format, the preferred icon is the one on the lower half of the above page. http://www.firebirdvideos.com/saintslives/lifeoftikhon.htm For creating a tiled background, it would best be reduced to about 60% - 50% of its original dimensions.

The Saint of the Day is Vincent Ferrer, O.P. of Valencia, who passed away in the year 1419. To display an image of this saint on your desktop background (in the tiled format), the recommended image my be found at the Pylger Almanac site http://www.pylgeralmanak.nl/ Select the page for this date "April 5", and the image of Saint Vincent in the form of a statue in a niche will be the first on the page. I recommend reducing this to 50% of the original dimensions and adding a border.
