The Saint of the Day is Etheldreda, Abbess of Ely, who passed away in 679. An image for a tiled background in your computer desktop display may be found at http://www.britannia.com/bios/saints/etheldreda.html Copyright ©1999 Britannia.com, LLC The effect would be improved by reducing the image to about 70% of the original dimensions and applying a border. You might want to experiment with the "Fill with Color" tool which can be used to insert a few swatches of background color, since large areas of white are problem in this application.

The Saint of the Day is Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea and theologian who passed away in the year 379. This is the traditional date for the western church, but the Roman Catholics are now schduling this observance on January 2. The choice of available icons is limited, but mine is here: http://www.dp.net/~stbasil/ --- at the web site of a Russian Orthodox church in Pennsylvania. This image would take a reduction to about 40% of the original dimension and the application of a border would facilitate the use of it as a tiled background for your computer desktop display.

The Saint of the Day is Barnabas, the Apostle, who is one of the important figures in the early days of the church as described in the Acts of the Apostle. Of the icons that I can find on the web, my favorite is the one at the following location: http://www.saintbarnabasaugusta.org/patronsaint.html For use to generate a tiled background for your computer's desktop display, a certain amount of processing would be needed. I would reduce the image to about 15% of its original dimensions and then select a rectangle around the figure of the apostle, including the lettering and excluding a substantial part of the gold background. Save this to a separate file and apply a border --- I would use the seasonal color of dark green.

For an image to use in a tiled background for your computer desktop display, I would recommend the picture of a drawing that may be found on the following web page. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/local/seattle_history/articles/grave.html . The Hero of the Day is Angelo Roncalli, Pope John XXIII, who passed away June 3, 1963. He is remembered on or about this date by the calendars of the Anglican Church in Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Roman Catholic Church has recognized him as "Blessed", but has not completed the process to declare him a "Saint" For a tiled background on your computer desktop display, I would use the image that may be found at the following web address: http://www.catholichomeandgarden.com/images/pope%20john%20xxiii%20portrait.jpg . This updates an entry from 2007. The Observance of the Day is the Visitation of Mary, which commemorates the event described in the Bible in Luke 1:39-56, when the expectant mother of Jesus visits her cousin, also expecting, who was to be the mother of John the Baptist. The wallpaper art is an illustration of this meeting in a painting by Domenico Ghirlandaio, currently on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Since the artwork in its entirety does not work well as a wallpaper tile, I have selected a detail of that painting as you see here.

The Saint of the Day is Bona of Pisa, an adherent of the rule of Saint Augustine, who was a travel guide for pilgrims. She passed away in approximately the year 1107. For a tiled background to your computer screen display, the following image of a Giovanni Lorenzetti painting from the following Saints Dictionary web page would be good. http://www.heiligenlexikon.de/BiographienB/Bona_von_Pisa.html This copies as a very large image which will need reduction to about 13% of its original dimensions. A border should also be applied.
With respect the the Landscape of the Day, I searched for appropriate from the area of world that includes Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo. I haven't found one yet that I would really want to use as wallpaper.

In 2008, we take note that this date is Memorial Day in the US --- in memory of the dead who served in the nation's armed forces, and especially those who died in action. However this blog is mainly about saint graphics; and the Saint of the Day is Augstine of Canterbury, bishop and missionary, who passed away in 605. For an image to be used in a tiled background on your computer display screen, I would recommend an icon from the Aidan Hart site http://www.aidanharticons.com/western_orthodox_saints.html. As you scroll down the page you will come to an icon for today's saint in the 3rd row of thumbnail image. The full-size image needs reduction to abour 22% of the original dimensions to serve well as a tile. Of course actually printing out and / or sharing a printed version would be violation of the copyright. Copyright Aidan Hart © 2004

The Saint of the Day is Vincent of Lerins, a monk and theologian who passed away around 445. An image useable for tiled wallpaper (background) on your computer screen display may be found at the following Dictionary of Saints web page. http://www.heiligenlexikon.de/BiographienV/Vinzenz_von_Lerins.html The icon image that you see here turns out to be a thumbnail (reduced version) of the actual image that you would copy to your My Pictures directory for wallpaper use. The actual image could well be reduced to about 45% of its original dimensions for optimal wallpaper effect. However, if you wish the text of the image to be legible ,you would want to select the upper portion of the full-length figure and save it to a new file which can be used effectively as a tile with less of a reduction in size.

The Hero of the Day was originally Alcuin, Deacon, Scholar, and Abbot of Tours, who passed away in 804. The Blessed Alcuin is on the calendar of the US Episcopal Church. However I didn't really like the Alcuin images available for wallpaper use. Therefore --- a change.
Henceforth the Saint of the Day will be Aethelred II, King of East Anglia, who was murdered --- some might say martyred --- in the year 794. A picture of Aethelred in the format of a stained glass window may found in Nash Ford Publishing's Early British Kingdoms archive. http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/adversaries/bios/aethelberteang.html You would probably want to reduce this to about 50% of its original dimensions for use as a wallpaper tile.

The Saint of the Day is Simon of Cyrene, cross-bearer for Christ. For an image suitable for use in tiled background for your computer screen display, I would recommend "Station Number 5" among the illustrations of the Stations of the Cross posted by an Anglican Church in Pickering, Ontario. http://www.stmartinsanglican.ca/stations.htm. It needs to be properly sized and to have a border added. To work from a larger image, click on the thumbnail sized image on this page. The only fair use is on your very own personal computer screen, where electrons can't be copyrighted once delivered by the Internet.

Acts 2:1-21: Fifty days after the crucifixion of Jesus --- the disciples of Christ on Pentecost
This event is illustrated with an image of a painting in collection of the Louvre by , Jean RestoutII. This is posted on the Web Gallery of Art site, where the image on the following page can be enlarged with a click. To me this neoclassical painting captures more of the drama of this event even though the details do not entirely reflect the location of the actual event.

1 Corinthians 12:3b-13: "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit" .... "For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body" For this use, I prefer an image with less white space that the original, so I have posted above a doctored version of the artwork that may found, and purchased in the form of a plaque (Stock #TL-111) from the following web page:
John 20:19-23: "Jesus said to [disciples] again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit...' " The following web page features clip art posted by the Misioneros Del Sagrado Corazón en el Perú. Generally, for wallpaper/screensaver use, I don't care for black and white images are that mostly white. But I'm not going to attempt to colorize this work of art.

The Saint of the Day is Dame Julian of Norwich, who passed away in 1417. There is a very poignant image of her out there in the blogosphere. I haven't been able to discover the name of the artist or the location of the original. It appears old enough to be in the public domain, so I am posting it here, slightly modified for use as a tiled background for a computer screen display.
