The Saint of the Day is Bartholomew, the Apostle. Ordinarily this observance is on August 24, which was on Sunday this year. The Saint of the Day is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Like other saints, she is honored on the date of her passing from an earthly existance to a heavenly one --- on the actual date, if known, or, as in this case, one selected to represent it. The Roman Catholic observance is called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Orthodox Church observance is the Dormition of the Theotokos, based on church doctrine about how this event may have occurred. The doctrine of the Assumption is one that envisions Mary's departure to heaven as being analagous to the Ascension of Christ as depicted in the New Testament.) This view informs the painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, who painted the image recommended for today's wallpaper, which may be found at Carol Gerten-Jackson's fine arts web site on the following web page:

The Landscape of the Day is another scene from Alaska, USA. It's a view looking toward Mount Foraker from the slopes of Denali (Mount McKinley). Due to the aspect ratio, it's going to be slightly distorted in the stretch format, but the distortion is not going to be noticeable to someone who hasn't seen the original.
