Wallpaper for Tuesday, September 30

The Saint of the Day is Jerome, Scholar, Translator, and Theologian, who passed away in 420. His primary achievement was translation of the Bible into Latin, the common language of the Roman Empire. He went back to the original Hebrew text as his source for the Old Testament, instead of relying on the Greek text, known as the Septuagint, available at that time. For use in creating a tiled wallpaper background, I have uploaded a framed image of a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. He shows Jerome dressed as a cardinal --- a posthumous honor, since the office of cardinal had not yet been established. The biography by James Kiefer is a good place to read a bit more about Saint Jerome. http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/query.cgi?9+30

This view represents an area of the world that include all of the Leeward Islands (including Guadeloupe), the Windward Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, and an area in eastern Venezuela representing about 3/8 of the area of that nation.

The Saint of the Day is Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury, who passed away in the year 690. The Wikipedia article "Theodore_of_Tarsus" seems to provide a good background. For use in creating a tiled wallpaper background for my computer screen, I have uploaded one of only two images of this saint that I could find. The best-sized version is the one at the following site --- http://www.standfirminfaith.com/mt/archives/000583.html I will reduce it to about 80% of its current size and apply a border. It's been used by couple of other of blogs, but the original posting (under a Creative Commons license) may have been the one at the following web site: http://www.macclesfield.antiochian.org.uk/directory.htm .

The Landscape of the Day is supposed represent California, USA and the northwestern third of Nevada. Oddly enough, I've had a hard time locating good wallpaper-quality images for this area. According to notes published posthumously, his Nobel-Prize-winning career was apparently guided with Christian ideals in mind, even though he was not a church member as an adult.

The Saints of the Day are Mendora, Metrodora and Nymphodora, martyrs at Nicomedia, who passed away in the early 4th century. For use as a tiled background in your computer desktop display, my choice of graphics would be the icon displayed for Mendora at the Orthodox Church in America web site: http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp It comes up with a display of the Orthodox saints recognized for the current date, so you will have to use the search feature --- keying in "September 10" --- to find the Mendora entry. All three sisters are shown in the thumbnail icon beside that name. Click on the "Life of the Saint" link to find a larger version of the icon and some informative text. For wallpaper use on your own computer, I would reduce that image to about 60% of its original size. You can do this with the Windows Paint utility program.
