The Saint of the Day is James of Jerusalem, a bishop and martyr. He is mentioned at various places in the New Testament. The Wikipedia article on this saint is titled "James_the_Just", and that was the source of the icon image that you see uploaded here. The Apostle Paul identifies him as the brother of Jesus (Galatians 1:18–19). The various references to James of Jerusalem are sorted out by the James Kiefer bibliographic sketch at http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/query.cgi?10+23 . The traditional belief is that his relationship to Jesus was like that of an older step-brother --- since Mary has been known as perpetually a virgin. (In a common Protestant reading of the scriptures, Mary is thought to have had a typical family life after the birth of Jesus, with James most likely a younger brother of Jesus.)

The Landscape of the Day is a scene from Goiás, Brazil.

The Saint of the Day is Glycera, martyr at Adrianopolis in the third century. She was one of six who died for the Christian faith at that time --- including Alexander the Bishop, Heraclius the Soldier, Anna, Elizabeth, and Theodota. However of that group only Glycera is represented on a icon, and it may be found at the Orthodox Church in America site: http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp . It is indexed to the date October 22. This will be one of several entries on the page, most illustrated with thumbnail icon images. Click on the Life of the Saint link for Glycera to get a high resolution image on a popup page with some background text. For use as a tiled background for your computer desktop display, I would reduce that image to about 45% of its original size.

The Saint of the Day is Hilarion of Gaza, an anchorite (a monk who lived in the desert) in the tradition of St. Anthony. He passed away in the year 371. An icon image may be found by searching the October 21 date at the following web page --- http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp?SID=4
You will find a brief history of the saint there. The image should be reduced to about 50% of its original size for use as a tiled wallpaper background for your computer desktop display.

[an amended entry follows] The Landscape of the Day is a scene from an unsprcified location in Brazil. http://www.flickr.com/photos/44508342@N00/274921451/sizes/l/ The round-the-world sequence calls for a scene from an area of the world in northeastern Brazil that includes the states of Sergipe, Alagoas, Permanbuco, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and a portion of Piauí. I wasn't satisfied with the scenes that I was able to find that was for that particular region so lets just say that scene I have now posted will be considered to represent that area of the world.

Screensaver Images for Sunday, October 19

Below are links to illustrations for scripture texts designated for this Twenty Third Sunday after Pentecost according to the Revised Common Lectionary for Year A on the "Sunday closest to October 19". (On a Windows PC, you can save the images referenced below to your My Pictures directory and set the screensaver option to a slide show of pictures in that directory including these.)

Exodus 33:12-23 --- Moses' vision of God --- The best illustration that I can find for this is Michelangelo's statue of Moses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Moses_San_Pietro_in_Vincoli.jpg There is a link at the bottom of the image web page back to the Wikipedia article describes it, including speculation as to the reason for the "horns".

Psalm 99 --- "Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and worship him upon his holy hill;" This seems to be a reference to the original temple of Israel on what is now called the Temple Mount. That space, drastically reconstructed in the intervening millenia, is now occupied by Islam's Dome of the Rock. Jewish worshippers on this holy hill now assemble at the western wall, a vestige of the second temple complex that was destroyed in 70 AD, as seen in the picture at the following site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/beggs/417556122/sizes/l/

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 --- "Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:" I have uploaded an icon image of Paul, Silvanus and Timothy from an illuminated parchment copy of the Pauline epistles. This is a detail from an image posted on the web by Christopher Haas, a history professor at Villanova University. http://www29.homepage.villanova.edu/christopher.haas/ethiopian-icons.htm

Matthew 22:15-22 --- The Lesson of Tribute to Caesar - This text is illustrated by a Cerezo Barrado drawing updating the story to a 21st century setting. In this illustration, the Portuguese text on the sign translates to "We are the people of God" http://www.servicioskoinonia.org/cerezo/dibujosA/52OrdinarioA29.jpg.

The Saint of the Day is Paraskeva the New. She was a contemplative nun, who is said to have spent most of her life in the Jordanian desert. She grew up in a town near Constantinople in the tenth century and her remains are now interred in the cathedral at Iasi, in northeastern Romania. An icon image may be found at the Orthodox Church in America site: http://www.oca.org/FSlives.asp indexed under the date October 14. Scroll down that page to find her thumbnail image, which is not a bad size for use as wallpaper. If you would like one a bit larger, click on the thumbnail to bring up a higher resolution image (with a history of this saint). The higher-resolution image needs reduction to about 50%-60% of its original size.

The Landscape of the Day is the a third scene representative of Amazonas, Brazil. http://www.flickr.com/photos/viagens-caepc/361865811/sizes/o/ . It shows a house at river's edge that is dwarfed by a jungle background of açaí palms. (Please ignore the fact that this scene is actually from the Brazilian state of Amapá. Let's just say that it is representative of Amazonas, a place from which landscape photos are rarely seen on the internet.)

The Saint of the Day is Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon to reign undisputedly as the King of England. (A struggle among the would-be successors to Edward led to the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror.) Edward was a godly man, who aided the poor and who was responsible for the initial construction of Westminster Abbey. He passed away on January 5, 1066, but on church calendars, he is remembered on the date that his remains were reinterred, October 13, the day before the Norman invasion. The image uploaded here is a detail from the "Wilton Diptych", a work of art in the collection of the National Gallery in London.

The Saint of the Day is Philip, the Deacon. Two Philips are mentioned in the New Testament. Philip, one of the 12 Apostles, was honored on May 1 with the apostle James, the son of Alpheua. Philip the Deacon, is thought to be a different individual, mentioned at two locations in the Acts of the Apostles. He is also called Philip the Evangelist for his role in the conversion of the eunuch from Ethiopia. (Acts 8:26-40) A very brief description of this saint and an image suitable for tiled wallpaper may be found at the web site of the Greek Orthodox Church in America http://www.goarch.org/en/chapel/saints.asp?contentid=236 To use this for the stated purpose, I would reduce it to 50%-60% of its original size and apply a border. You can read a bit more about this saint through the Wikipedia article indexed as "Philip_the_Evangelist"

The Hero of the Day is William Tyndale, priest, scholar, martyr, who passed away in 1536. He worked on an early translation of the Bible into the English language, and was the first to undertake this project utilizing authoritative Greek and Hebrew texts. With the invention of the printing, it had become possible to make the Bible widely available, but one had to be learned in Latin to read it. Tyndale completed only the New Testament, the Pentateuch (first five books of the Old Testament) and the book of Jonah, according to the biographical sketch by William Kiefer. http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/query.cgi?10+6 But his work was an important resource for the successful King James Version. Since this project was not approved by the Church, he was deemed a heretic, did most of his work in hiding and paid the price with his life.
