Observance of the Day --- Holy Name of Jesus -- Comment: On the 8th day after the birth of a male Jewish child it was time for the "bris", a modern abbreviated reference to the Hebrew term for covenant of circumcision. In the church the January 1 observance has traditionally been known as the Feast of the Circumcision --- historically appropriate, to be sure, but probably a bit off-putting for many. Like a christening (i.e. infant baptist), the circumcision would have been the first ceremonial occasion on which the name of the male infant was spoken. It was therefore an appropriate date for thinking about the holy name of Jesus, and its theological significance; and this form of observance for January has become common in the Roman and Anglican Churches

Matthew and Luke give (different) genealogies to establish the connection. The messianic kingdom described here would seem be a vision of the "kingdom of heaven" as proclaimed by Jesus. ]

He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Revised Standard Version) - This is a vision of the Messianic Age that the world awaits 2,700 years after these lines were written.

Saint of the Day --- The Prophet Habakkuk, author of a book of the Old Testament is honored as a saint by many Orthodox churches.
Scripture of the Day --- Isaiah 1:21-26 -- How the faithful city has become a harlot, she that was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers. Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water. Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the fatherless, and the widow's cause does not come to them. Therefore the Lord says, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: "Ah, I will vent my wrath on my enemies, and avenge myself on my foes. I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy. And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city." (Revised Standard Version) -
Note: Here the prophet Isaiah laments the coming downfall of Jerusalem, but we may have some concern as to the applicabliity of this language to 21st century society.
