Saint of the Day --- John Bosco (1815 - 1888) -- priest, educator
Scripture of the Day --- Isaiah 51: 4-6 -- [Selection based on the Daily Office Lectionary in the Book of Common Prayer] --"Listen to me, my people, and give ear to me, my nation; for a law will go forth from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples. My deliverance draws near speedily, my salvation has gone forth, and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me, and for my arm they hope. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be for ever, and my deliverance will never be ended." (Comment: In this passage, the prophet --- perhaps the second to write under the name Isaiah --- writes a message to the children of Israel worded as one coning directly from God. This comes in the same part of Isaiah as the "servant songs", which Christians understand as prophecies fortelling the coming of Christ, Jesus. So when Christians read "My deliverance draws near speedily ... my salvation will be for ever", we understand that Christ is our deliverance and through him (if we accept the covenat of Christ) our salvation will be for ever.")

But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me [for threee years and then visited Cephas there, and met with James , the Lord's brother, but stayed there only for fifteen days] ... but [then] I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. And I was still not known by sight to the churches of Christ in Judea; they only heard it said, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."

Observance of the Day ---- Third Sunday after Epiphany
Collect: (prayer for intentions that align, more or less, with the scriptures readings which are designated for this particular Sunday) Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good Newsomf his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Scripture --- Selected from the Eucharistic Lectionary for Year B -- Mark 1:14-20 -- Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you become fishers of [people]." And immediately they left their nets and followed him., And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zeb'edee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zeb'edee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him. [Comment: This departure of the four disciples from their homes sounds pretty abrupt. But remember that Mark's gospel is a gospel of action; he wastes no words on filling in the details. I expect that God in his providence had caused the groundwork to be laid so that their decision to leave was the culmination of a series of fortunate events.]

Scripture of the Day --- Psalm 43:3-4 -- 3 Oh send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise thee with the lyre, O God, my God. (RSV)

Zeitgeist --- There's an old hymn (translated from Latin by Benjamin Webb) "Oh love, how deep, how broad, how high....that ... the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortal's sake" And the following verses follow a pattern illustrated here by the fifth verse; "For us he rose from death again; for us he went on high to reign; for us he sent his Spirit here -- to guide, to strengthen and to cheer". And here is how Barak Obama saluted the builders of our nation, "the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things" "For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans... . For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth. For us they fought and died in place like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh."

Saint of the Day --- Vincent of Saragossa ( ? - 304), Deacon and Martyr --
Scripture of the Day --- Mark 4:30-32 And [Jesus] said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is [one of] the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all [forbs], and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." (RSV, edited) [Note: The term "forb" is used to describe durable non-woody plants. The term "shrub" in the Bible connotes a woody plant, a category that does not include the mustard plant. The term "smallest of all the seeds" must be interpreted with respect to the natural history knowledge of the first century Judaean. I think the point is that if you seek the kingdom of God ,you will sow the seed for an outstanding life that will benefit others.]
Word of the Day --- wrangled -- 1) quarreled noisily, angrily or disruptively; 2) herded and cared for horses, or other livestock
Place of the Day --- Edendale, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa -- 29°38'54"S, 30°17'40"E - expressway exit / (former?) railway station - a central point in a area of dispersed rural settlement, 7 miles SW of Pietermaritzburg and 46 miles ENE of the state capital, Durban.
Zeitgeist --- "gathering clouds and rising storms" This would seem to be the phrase that President Obama's speech writer must have originally had in mind for the second paragraph of his inaugural address. It hangs together and makes a strong impression --- a little too strong evidently. In the actual speech a less pessimistic wording was used.

Scripture of the Day --- Mark 4:14-20 -- [Jesus explains to his disciples the Parable of the Sower who plants the seed by casting it over the ground.] "The sower sows the word. And these are the ones [the people who react like the soil] along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold." (RSV)

Scripture of the Day --- Ephesians 4: 17, 20, 22-32 -- Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the [average people] do, in the futility of their minds ... You did not so learn Christ! -- Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, putting away falsehood, let every one speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Observance of the Day --- Confession of Peter the Apostle [tranferred from Sunday, January 18] On this day the church remembers how the Apostle Peter was led by God's grace to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16:13-20), and join with Peter, and with all Christians around the world in hailing Jesus as our Lord, God, and Savior. (adapted from commentary by James Kiefer)
Scripture of the Day --- Ephesians 4:1-7 -- I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Place of the Day --- Wannee, Florida, USA -- 29°43'06"N, 82°56'29"W - a rural settlement along the Suwanee River, about 5 miles ESE of the village of Bell on US Highway 129, and about 10 miles NE of the town of Trenton, the seat of Gilchrist County and about 36 miles W of the city of Gainesville.
Collect: (prayer for intentions that align, more or less, with the scriptures readings which are designated for this particular Sunday) Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.Selected Scripture of the Day --- John 1: 45-51 -- Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." (RSV) [Comment: The last verse is a reference to the vision of the patriarch Jacob -- Genesis 28:12-22 -- and a sign that Jesus would be in direct communication with God. BTW - John is the only one of the four gospel writer who mentions the apostle Nathanael, but he never mentions Bartholomew who is included by the other gospel writers in the list of the 12 apostles. As far as we know, the gospel references to Nathanael and Bartholomew pertain to the same person.]

Observance of the Day --- Second Sunday after Christmas
Selected Scripture of the Day --- Ephesians 1:17-19 [In the words of the Apostle Paul writing to the Church in Ephesus] I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. [Selected from among of the designated and alternarive readings of the Eucharistic Lectionary (ECUSA) for the Second Sunday after Christmas]
Place of the Day --- Echague, Isabella, Philippines -- 16°42'18"N, 121°40'34"E - a town located on Highway 5, about 28 miles SSW of Ilagan, the district capital and about 70 mile NE of the city of Baguio.
Orientation: On this Sunday (the 11th day of Christmas), the church is still celebrating the birth of Jesus and more importantly for us, the incarnation of Christ in human form. The church is also looking forward to the Feast of Epiphany (January 6th) which celebrates the visit of the magi (the three wise men), which is an early sign that the importance of Jesus will not be limited to the role of the long-expected Messiah for the Jews. In Jesus, the Divine Presence is made known for all the peoples of the Earth. AC
Collect of the Day: O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share, your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and regins with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
An Anthem Text: But now as at the ending, The low is lifted high; The stars shall bend their voices, And every stone shall cry. In praises of the Child By whose descent among us The worlds are reconciled. Author: Richard Wilbur
