Themes of Faith from Maundy Thursday, 2010

Jesus' last instructions to his disciples before the events of his crucifixion

1. Then [during the Passover meal, Jesus] took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 20And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood Luke 22:19-20

2. ... during supper Jesus, ... got up from the table,* took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?Peter said to [Jesus], "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." John 13:2b, 4-6

3. "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35

The following video presents music set to a Latin text that honors the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist (i.e. the ordinance of the Lord's Supper). The music is Tantum Ergo, by Charles Marie Widor, and the presentation is by the choir and organ of the basilica in Weingarten, Germany. A CD is advertised through the web site at: http://www.chororgel.de/html/jubilaums-cd.html for the benefit of the organ which apparently needs restoration.
